Built in 1967, Tai Sang building has been a pioneer in the most important district (Central) in Hong Kong. Therefore, it is relatively lower than its surroundings that were built decades later. The existing façade has deep vertical shade features on the 3 sides of building that were used to be the prime faces that received optimal sunlight. Currently, it sits right in the middle between BOC tower and Public Bank tower that are taller and leaves only 1 main façade facing Des Voeux Road Central.
The initial approach is to immediately remove the vertical shades on 3 sides and open up as much as possible to allow the main facade to receive sunlight, especially from the east. It is essential to maintain the vertical linear language on the façade for a relatively low building. The existing windows need to remain untouched as tenants will continue to rent the office spaces. They were very rigid in repetitive manner. The new proposed façade attempts to create a new grid for multiple window modules that give variation as new window frames. Only with 3 window modules puzzled into a dynamic façade pattern. The main materials used are stone panels for the main façade and rose gold coated metal panel for the new window frame. The gold element has been the identity for Tai Sang building. The hanging gold bar on the canopy is a main feature to ornament the main entrance to the bank.
